I do genuinely beleieve it is essential to a business but I know that very little income is generated from social media. A lot of the very large companies are reducing their social media and I think that we will ultimately find it doesn't make money but is fun...the large follower numbers / linkedin contacts...a grown up pokemon game. I agree that social media is about building branding & relationship and when it comes to marketing, you cant go to the "relationship bank" and ask for a withdrawal of funds when you haven't deposited anything. Free value & genuine interaction are currency in my book. Be careful tho, you'll also lose influence if your fans/followers/readers, feel that you are only "giving to get". If you offer a credible relationship, grounded in their best interest and seek only to market valuable products or services that will have a positive impact on those goals then you've established a healthy social media marketing relationship. However, if you try to cash in by offering products that are junk, don't deliver value or give the impression that you are marketing far too frequently and you will lose both credibility and influence.
