New Twitter Ad Campaign Generates Powerful ROI

The Crazy Results From A Campaign Of Only 2 Sponsored Tweets!

Recently, Internships.com ran a paid ad campaign on twitter using Charlie Sheen.

Say what you want about the “Sheen” train wreck, the numbers are in and they’re impressive enough that I had to share them with you.

According to the internal data from Omniture, Internships.com saw 1,035,021 unique visitors (which was nearly two uniques per link click) as a result of the tweets, the subsequent shares and retweets!

The cost at first seems pretty hefty at approximately 100K for the Ad.ly campaign to advertise a social media intern job position that was as previously stated, tweeted ad only twice.  However, upon closer examination we’ll see how effective the venture was and how profitable it could have potentially been.

At $100,000 for the campaign, that translates into $0.09 per unique visitor, which is outstanding regardless of the medium. Even more impressive number as far as I was concerned was that 82,148 people who took the time, filled completed the forms and formally applied for the internship. That translates into a cost of $1.21 per completed application!

If that was an internet marketing company advertising a well positioned product for only $9.95, the campaign would have generated over $717K in profit in two tweets!  That’s just crazy!

One could say that Internetships.com looked at Sheens following demographic and hit the bullseye but there are numbers coming from well optimized twitter ad campaigns that are returning some great ROI.

Even TechCrunch wrote: “Whatever you may think of Sheen’s lifestyle, these numbers are another bit of evidence proving that Twitter as a marketing tool can no longer be ignored.”

So do you think this is just part of the recent Sheen “wave of popularity” or a sign that well matched sponsored tweets are emerging to become part of a legitimate social media marketing strategy?

    While on the surface it look successful, my follow-up question would be were those 82,148 people who took the time, filled completed the forms and formally applied for the internship “quality leads”?

    Traffic is one thing, quality is another.

      Good lookin out on the missing “n” in the link Jennifer! I also agree. Although when first starting a site, increasing your traffic numbers to gain first page ranking is advantageous however it still needs to be targeted. Ultimately you want to attract traffic that are targeted prospects that will lead to potential sales rather than just numbers. After all its all about the conversions!
