Connecting through Twitter can be a difficult as your followers grow and you attempt to wade through all the auto tweet noise. I’ve provided a list of the top 4 Twitter-app directories and the top 10 Twitter follow directories that will help you explode your followers and truly get connected with those that are participating and providing value.

Using a combination of several of these resources will boost your followers, your interactions, your link clicks and  allow you to break your followers into sub-groups to easily manage and truly network on Twitter.

 The Top 4 Twitter App Directories

Searching for people or applications on Twitter? Good luck with that. Since Twitter offers little in the way of people search features (though they now have an improved suggestion tool), your search for interesting and dynamic people to follow and applications to use could be a giant waste of your time.

Thankfully there are more than a few third-party resources that you can turn to for finding new people to follow, and new tools to help you do what Twitter won’t let you. We’ll shed a little light on these 15 directories by separating them into four categories: applications, people, politics, and strictly business.

1. Twitter Fan Wiki

The apps section of Twitter Fan Wiki is like Wikipedia for, so it’s for users, by users model, making it the most robust in terms of applications listed, but potentially the most unreliable if entries aren’t current. Applications are broken down into three categories: desktop apps, web apps, and mobile apps. And with subcategories under each heading, Twitter Fan Wiki makes it easy to drill down to just the apps you want to research.

There are lots and lots of applications, so you’re bound to happen upon something new and cool that you didn’t even know existed.

2. Twitdom

 Twitdom, which launched with 50+ apps and now houses more than 300, uses WordPress as a platform to display information on Twitter applications and let users navigate category types via tabs to find desktop, mobile, or web apps, browser plugins, and mashups.

Application profiles. Each application has a short profile that also lists related applications. Users can also comment on or rate the applications. And even though it’s easy to miss, users can view the highest rated applications across the site by clicking the Popular link at the top of the site.

3. Twtbase

Similar to Twitdom, Twtbase also houses their database of applications within WordPress and divides them up into either the web, mobile, desktop, or browser plug-in buckets.

The thumbnail view. Each application has a screenshot, displays current rating, and number of votes. Twtbase also has a Site of the Day page that features one app per day.

4. Twapps

In the same vein as Twtbase, Twapps highlights each app with a thumbnail image and comment content on the home page. Users can navigate category tabs to search for desktop apps, Firefox plugins, mobile, and web apps.

Look and feel. The site is easy on the eyes, and since there’s only about 90 apps listed you won’t get overwhelmed by selection.

Top 10 Twitter Follow Directories & Tools

Twitter directories are a useful way to find new followers. These directories are all different ways of associating people with similar interests or geography. Here is a list of some of the top Twitter Directories .

1. WeFollow

WeFollow is a User Powered Twitter Directory of Twitter users organized by interests.This directory was founded by Kevin Rose in early 2009.

Here you can find Twitter celebrities, actors, TV personalities, or new Twitter friends in your area.

2. Twellow – The Twitter Yellow Pages

Twellow is a great new search tool and directory for discovering Twitter users. Twellow was launched by producers of WebProNews.

Twellow.com grabs publicly available messages from the Twitter.com micro-blogging service. It then analyzes and categorizes each of the users responsible for those messages into the various categories found at Twellow.com. By adding these people to specific categories we help you narrow your searching into specific niches where you can find who you are looking for.

Use the Get Listed form to request the user information from Twitter and have it added to Twellow.

3. TWIBES.com

One of my personal favorites.  Twibes organizes Twitter conversations by topic which makes it a whole lot easier for you to find them, stay up to date, and participate.

A lot of people set up a Twitter account… and then what? With Twibes, you can search on a keyword or browse their categories and find Twitter people who are interested in the same things that you are.

Even if you are active on Twitter, there can be lots of random conversations that are hard to follow. Twibes makes it easy to participate in Twitter conversations you care about, which is made even easier with their threading feature. This allows you to follow all replies to a tweet from start to finish, without having a bunch of other tweets in the way.

It basically allows you to create sub-groups you can then inneract with by topic and based on what their interests are.  This is a great tool for Internet marketers!

4. TwitterPacks

The semi-controversial TwitterPacks is a wiki style directory originally started by Chris Brogan about a year ago, had some issues then regrouped and got its act together.

People are organized in packs by topic, interest, location, company, and events. Now that the dust has settled, TwitterPacks could be just the thing you need to find great people to follow on Twitter.

Grouped in unique “packs” the category types are endless, with the Interest packs including everyone from fitness buffs to gardening gurus, so it’s the perfect place for hobbyists and serious marketers to add themselves or connect with like minded individuals. Plus, the convenient Autopack tool lets you follow and unfollow Twitter users based on their pack.

5. TwitDir

TwitDir is a searchable directory of Twitter users.

TwitDir enables you to find statistics of the Top 100 followers, Top 100 followed, Top 100 favoriters and Top 100 updaters. It also works as a search engine for Twitter users, which mean you can find any user information by searching his name.

Just Tweet It is a user directory for Twitter organized by genre to allow for users to easily find other Twitter users to connect with.

It was created to make it easier for people using the popular micro-blogging service Twitter to find other “Tweeters” with similar interests.

TweetFind.com is a Twitter Search Directory for Businesses & Users.

Its a Twitter Directory where Businesses & People can add their own Twitter accounts to a Free Twitter Directory.

Twibs is the Twitter Business Directory. Twibs was created by a small group of people with one purpose: Give twitter users a place to find businesses on twitter.

9. GeoFollow

GeoFollow is a location based Twitter directory. This directory that takes advantage of adding listings based on tweets to their own account.

Tweet the following and replace your geographic information and tags: @geofollow your city, your State Your Zip #tag1 #tag2 #tag3.

10. TweeterTags

Similar to WeFollow, you can find others on Twitter by using TweeterTags‘ keywords. But unlike WeFollow, you don’t input tags. Instead, the service searches through Twitter to find commonly tweeted tags and allows you to click on them from a cloud. Whenever you click a tag, you’re given a listing of people who have mentioned it in recent tweets.
